Unpacking Promising Practices on Resilience – Building in Africa’s Lake Chad Borderlands

Borderland communities in the Lake Chad Basin have recorded slow progress towards achieving sustainable development due to complex challenges, notably insecurity, poverty, social fragmentation, and the impact of climate change. However, whilst some of these challenges are being addressed incrementally, mainly through investments in Prevention of Violent Extremism (PVE), livelihoods support for the most vulnerable persons, rebuilding of damaged community infrastructure, transitional justice programme and local governance revitalization by the Governments of Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, as well as through security operations coordinated by the regional Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), the prospects of building forward better are still unclear. An argument advanced for this is that the underlying causes of fragility are yet to be sufficiently mainstreamed into responses of Governments and development actors in the region. The discussion will provide practical perspectives from actors with different backgrounds and lens views, on successes achieved, lingering challenges and how to bridge the gaps in current responses and map out pathways to sustainable resilience building.

The discussion will offer development solutions, based on the perspectives of those affected primarily by the impact of insurgency and from development workers on the frontline.
