Preventing atrocity crimes: Countering and addressing hate speech

Missed the live session? Watch event webinar above.

This event focuses on the prevention of atrocity crimes by zooming in on one of the main risk indicators – hate speech – as per the Framework of Analysis for Atrocity Crimes

The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of countering and addressing hate speech as a way to build societies resilient to the risk of violence including violent extremism and atrocity crimes – genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, with a particular focus on addressing and countering hate speech and its root causes.

It also aims to showcase the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration to implement the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech. Finally, the event aims at stressing the importance of focusing prevention initiatives at the grassroots, including by engaging with local civil society organizations to counter and address hate speech, as per the Plan of Action for Religious Leaders and Actors to Prevent Incitement to Violence that Could Lead to Atrocity Crimes
