Beyond UN transitions: Sustaining peacebuilding and rule of law

UN missions are the most robust mechanism the United Nations can deploy to help countries navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace. But UN missions are temporary in nature and when they are asked to withdraw, critical challenges to peacebuilding, including the rule of law, may remain. What can the UN System do to preserve gains when a UN Mission withdraws from a country and promote a longer-term peacebuilding and developmental agenda, with often less means for the UN to support them? This question will be addressed during an online discussion where leading experts will highlight ways in which the UN and its partners can work better together to safeguard and further promote rule of law and peacebuilding achievements in UN transition settings.

A particular focus will be placed on Liberia, Sudan and Haiti where the departures of UNMIL, UNAMID and MINUJUSTH  have offered examples of joint UN Mission–UN Country Team efforts in the areas of peacebuilding and rule of law. The panelists will also highlight the role of integrated planning and programming in UN transition settings and discuss the impact of these modalities and their relevance for upcoming UN transition settings. The event will also provide an opportunity to present how UNDP, in collaboration with DCO, DPO and DPPA, is supporting UN transitions in fragile and post-conflict settings through the implementation of the UN Transitions Project.

This event is co-organized by the UN Transitions Project (DCO-DPO-DPPA-UNDP) and UNDP’s UNDP’s Rule of Law, Security and Human Rights Team. For more information, please contact Ms. Aryana Urbani (aryana.urbani@un.org) and Ms. Shahzada Ahmad (shahzada.ahmad@undp.org).
